Vein treatment abroad
Vein treatment on Medbook covers the assessment and treatment of varicose veins. It includes a vein consultation with a Doppler scan, laser vein ablation (EVLA), sclerotherapy, and phlebectomy and vein surgery.
Two countries offer vein treatment through Medbook: Lithuania, in Kaunas, and Turkey, in eight cities. Both offer every procedure in the area, so what sets them apart is the city, the journey and the services arranged for you. This page explains what can be arranged, how the two destinations differ and what to gather before you travel.
You see a price only when a clinic makes you an offer.

What Medbook can arrange
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins under the skin, usually on the legs. Before planning treatment, a specialist usually checks the blood flow in the veins with an ultrasound scan; on Medbook's list, the vein consultation with a Doppler scan is a procedure of its own. In laser vein ablation (EVLA), a thin tube called a catheter is passed into the vein, and energy from a laser heats the vein to close it off, so that blood stops flowing through it. In sclerotherapy, a chemical is injected into the vein to block it. Vein surgery removes the affected veins, and phlebectomy is listed together with it.
If you are not sure which procedure you need, choose "Not sure yet" under vein treatment when you describe your case, or choose the vein consultation with a Doppler scan. The clinic looks at the details of your case before it makes you an offer.
Choosing a destination
Lithuania offers every vein procedure on Medbook's list, and all treatment there takes place in Kaunas. Transfers, accommodation, a personal coordinator, an online consultation before you travel and aftercare are arranged for you. An interpreter and visa support are not among the services in Lithuania.
Turkey also offers every vein procedure on the list, in Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Bodrum, Bursa, Eskişehir and Kayseri. Every service on Medbook's list is arranged there, including an interpreter and visa support.
Because both countries offer the same procedures, you can ask both and compare the offers, including the dates and where the treatment takes place. Wherever you go, once you confirm an offer, your roadmap lets you book flights and transfers yourself or ask Medbook to arrange them.
Before you travel
Gather the results of any earlier ultrasound or Doppler scan of your legs, letters from your doctor and notes on any earlier vein treatment, with the dates. Write down the medications you take, including any blood thinners, and any allergies. When you describe your case, the assistant asks about chronic conditions, with blood clotting issues among the choices, and about allergies and medications.
An online consultation before you travel is arranged in both countries. Questions worth asking during the consultation:
- Do you need a new scan, or can you use one I already have?
- Will both legs be treated on the same trip?
- Will I need compression stockings afterwards, including for the flight home?
- How long should I plan to stay, and when can I fly home?
When you compare offers, look at the dates and at whether follow-up is included.
Questions
Do Lithuania and Turkey offer the same vein treatments?
Yes. Both offer every vein procedure on Medbook's list. They differ in their cities and in the services arranged for you, which this page shows for each country.
Can I combine vein treatment with another procedure?
Yes. You can choose several treatments when you describe your case, for example vein treatment together with an orthopaedic procedure, which Lithuania and Turkey also offer. Each destination in your results shows which of them it offers.
Is vascular surgery part of this area?
No. Aortic and vascular surgery belongs to the heart and vascular area on Medbook and is offered in Turkey. This area covers varicose veins.
Is an interpreter arranged?
In Turkey, yes. An interpreter is among the services arranged there, but not in Lithuania. The assistant asks which language you are most comfortable communicating in, and your answer is part of your request for offers.
