Cancer care abroad

Cancer care on Medbook covers treatment for several types of cancer and the main forms of cancer treatment. It includes treatment for breast, prostate and lung cancer, gynaecological cancers, cancers of the kidney, bladder and testicles, the digestive system, the head and neck, and the blood, together with radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Cancer care is offered through Medbook in Turkey, in eight cities. This page explains what can be arranged, where the treatment takes place and how to prepare your medical records. It does not tell you which treatment is right for you: that decision belongs to your doctors.

How a Medbook trip works

  1. Tell the assistant what you need treated, where you travel from and when.
  2. See the destinations that offer your treatment and choose where to ask.
  3. Receive offers with a price and dates.
  4. Confirm an offer and get a day-by-day travel roadmap.

What Medbook can arrange

Medbook's list groups cancer treatment by type: breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer and gynaecological cancer treatment; kidney, bladder and testicular cancer; bowel, stomach and liver cancer; head, neck and thyroid cancer; and blood cancers together with bone marrow transplant. Radiotherapy and radiosurgery, and chemotherapy and immunotherapy, are listed as separate procedures. Radiotherapy is a treatment where radiation is used to kill cancer cells, and chemotherapy uses medicine to kill cancer cells. Immunotherapy is a cancer treatment that helps your immune system fight cancer. A stem cell or bone marrow transplant replaces damaged blood cells with healthy ones.

When you describe your case, choose the type of cancer and, if your doctors have proposed one, the form of treatment. If you are not sure what to choose, select "Not sure yet" under cancer care, or write in your own words what your doctors have told you. The clinic looks at the details of your case before it makes you an offer.

Where treatment takes place

Turkey offers every procedure in this area, in Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Bodrum, Bursa, Eskişehir and Kayseri. You do not have to choose a city first. Each offer shows where your treatment takes place, so you can compare places as well as dates.

Every service on Medbook's list is arranged in Turkey: airport and clinic transfers, accommodation, an interpreter, a personal coordinator, visa support, an online consultation before you travel and aftercare. Once you confirm an offer, your roadmap lets you book flights and transfers yourself or ask Medbook to arrange them.

Chemotherapy is usually given in cycles over several months, with a break of a few days or weeks between treatments. Ask in the online consultation before you travel how the treatment schedule fits your trips, and check the dates in each offer.

Before you travel

Medbook does not advise on cancer treatment. Which treatment you have, and whether to look for a second opinion or treatment abroad, are decisions to make with your doctors, so talk to them before you ask for offers. Then gather a complete set of records and keep copies with you when you travel:

  • The pathology report from any biopsy or surgery
  • Recent CT, MRI or PET scans with their written reports and, if you have them, the image files themselves
  • Letters and treatment summaries from your doctors, including any surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy you have had
  • Recent blood test results
  • A list of the medications you take and any allergies

The assistant asks about chronic conditions, allergies and medications when you describe your case. An online consultation before you travel is among the services arranged in Turkey. Questions worth asking during the consultation:

  • Which records do you need, and in which language?
  • How many trips does the treatment plan involve, and how long is each stay?
  • Should someone travel with me?
  • Will I receive a written report for my doctors at home, and in which language?

When you compare offers, look at the dates and at whether follow-up is included.

Questions

Can Medbook tell me which treatment I need?

No. Medbook arranges the trip and passes your request to the destinations you choose, but it does not give medical advice. Decisions about your treatment belong to your doctors, and the clinic looks at the details of your case before it makes you an offer.

Do clinics see my name and contact details?

Not when you ask for offers. Nothing is sent before you choose which destinations to ask, and the request sent to each destination describes your case without your name, e-mail address or phone number.

Is cancer screening part of this area?

No. On Medbook, cancer screening is part of the health check-up area and is offered in Turkey and South Korea. This area covers cancer treatment.

Is an interpreter arranged?

Yes. An interpreter is among the services arranged in Turkey, together with a personal coordinator and aftercare. The assistant also asks which language you are most comfortable communicating in.
